| What’s the difference between a financial adviser and a financial planner?
Damned if I know. I’ve classified as advisers those individuals that sell
stocks as well as mutual funds and they’re listed in the Brokers &
Investment Advisers category above. Financial Planners I’ve taken to be
individuals or companies specializing in a big picture outlook in personal
financial management, covering everything from debt management to insurance
to investing and RRSPs. Most such planners are licensed to sell mutual
funds but not stocks. And most have a CFP or RFP certification, though this
is not required by law and there are many freelance planners with no such
credentials. In any event, they’re listed here. |
| Though its seldom addressed, value-investing and growth-investing share
an inseparable kinship. Both selection strategies place earnings-per-share
at the helm. The value investor relies on earnings to calculate the inequity
between market value and intrinsic value. Meanwhile the growth investor
relies on earnings to calculate growth rates. Although the value investor
is not a proponent of growth per se, he benefits just the same
from a positive earnings surprise. Strong earnings wont translate to
increased growth but would translate instead to increased fair value.
By the same token the growth investor is not a value investor as such,
but he too is relying on price to gravitate toward growth-related value.
Otherwise, why would he bother to monitor growth?
Since both strategies deal with investor perceptions however,
theyre an inexact science at best. |
