What’s the difference between a financial adviser and a financial planner? Damned if I know. I’ve classified as advisers those individuals that sell stocks as well as mutual funds and they’re listed in the Brokers & Investment Advisers category above. Financial Planners I’ve taken to be individuals or companies specializing in a big picture outlook in personal financial management, covering everything from debt management to insurance to investing and RRSPs. Most such planners are licensed to sell mutual funds but not stocks. And most have a CFP or RFP certification, though this is not required by law and there are many freelance planners with no such credentials. In any event, they’re listed here.
